Reducing Dementia Risk: A Personal Approach to Brain Health in Washington State

Many of the families we work with are experiencing some level of dementia. We see the emotional and physical toll it takes on loved ones. The question often arises: what if we could reduce the risk or slow the progression through intentional lifestyle changes? Research suggests that we can.

Evidence-Based Strategies for Cognitive Health

According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), "A nutritious diet, physical activity, social engagement, and mentally stimulating pursuits have all been associated with helping people stay healthy as they age. These factors might also help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s." (Alzheimer’s and Dementia Fact Sheet, NIA)

These lifestyle factors are not just theoretical; they are actively integrated into many assisted living and adult family homes across Washington State. Here's how:

Nutritious Diets: Fueling Brain Health

The NIA emphasizes that making healthy food choices is a key strategy for reducing dementia risk. (Healthy Eating, NIA) In Washington, many senior communities partner with dietitians to offer meals rich in antioxidants, omega-3s, and vitamins that support cognitive function. Some facilities follow Mediterranean-style menus, which research suggests may help slow cognitive decline.

If you are interested in introducing more Mediterranean diet recipes, most people do not realize that not all olive oil has the same valuable nutrients. Here is a great resource for independent olive oil testing as well as testing for many other foods and supplements. It can help you select ingredients that provide the nutrients you want without the low-quality or misleading products. (ConsumerLab Olive Oil Reviews)

For a high-quality example, California Olive Ranch Extra Virgin Olive Oil 100% California is a reliable option for everyday cooking. (California Olive Ranch)

Active Lifestyles: More Than Just Exercise

The NIA notes that engaging in social and productive activities you enjoy can help maintain well-being and independence as you age. (Participating in Activities You Enjoy, NIA) In Washington, many senior living communities offer a variety of activities that promote physical and mental health. These include walking clubs, dance classes, and art workshops. Such activities enhance physical health while also providing opportunities for social engagement and cognitive stimulation.

Social Engagement: Building Connections

Social isolation is a known risk factor for cognitive decline. Washington's assisted living communities foster strong social networks through group outings, communal dining, and volunteer opportunities. These interactions help residents maintain a sense of purpose and emotional well-being, which are crucial for brain health.

Mental Stimulation: Keeping the Mind Sharp

The NIA highlights that mentally stimulating pursuits are associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline. Many Washington senior communities offer programs like book clubs, memory games, and educational seminars to keep residents' minds active and engaged.

Thoughtful Design: Creating Brain-Healthy Environments

Beyond activities, the physical environment plays a role in cognitive health. Many assisted living and adult family homes in Washington are designed with features that promote safety and mental stimulation, such as well-lit hallways, secure outdoor spaces, and areas for gardening or art. These environments encourage residents to stay active and engaged, supporting overall brain health.

At Silver Age, we believe that treating people well and doing the right thing leads to lasting success. Our story began with founder Abby Durr’s personal caregiving journey. While caring for her grandfather—who was like a father to her—she experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of end-of-life care. “I lived next door and had the incredible privilege of sitting with him, holding his hand, bathing him, and helping guide his care.”

Abby’s passion for serving older adults grew while working at a local assisted living and memory care community. She recalls the first resident fondly: “She proudly introduced herself to everyone as the first to move in.” That community grew to 92 residents, each with a unique story. As a care coordinator and later a marketing director, Abby discovered senior referral services and felt called to help families facing major care transitions.

Most people hope to stay at home through life’s end—but when plans change, we’re here. With compassion and expertise, we’ll guide you to trusted care resources and housing that fits your needs, lifestyle, and budget.

Since 2008, Silver Age has been helping Seattle-area families find trusted care providers.
